Project Notes
The project started when the homeowners realized their deck had become hazardous, with plywood patching hiding soft, rotted boards underneath. Inspection revealed the real problem: undersized 8” footings, 4x4 posts, and a beam that was no longer up to the task. For elderly clients, that risk was unacceptable.
Before any demo, a temporary support wall was constructed underneath to prevent accidental collapse. Old decking was then removed, which exposed even deeper problems — not just with the surface boards, but with the structural heart of the deck.
All footings were upgraded to 12” diameter concrete forms, poured to the proper frost depth and aligned for maximum stability. Every 4x4 support post was replaced with 6x6 pressure-treated lumber, vastly increasing strength and resistance to decay.
The main support beam, previously just a double 2x8, was upgraded to a triple 2x8 engineered beam. Heavy-duty Tico brackets, hurricane ties, and added blocking were installed throughout the frame, bringing the deck up to and above code requirements.
With the structure secure, all new decking was installed with premium screws, straight alignment, and a focus on drainage and long-term surface life. The back railing was temporarily removed during the project, then reinstalled and checked for stability.
Why it matters: This wasn’t just a cosmetic upgrade — it was a life safety project. The deck now feels rock solid underfoot, with every element built to protect and serve the clients for years to come. No more soft spots. No more worries.
