📍 What You’re Looking At:

These photos show the full revival of a neglected backyard coop that had become structurally compromised and uninhabitable. The process included replacing all footings, reinforcing wall framing, insulating with rigid foam board, sealing with DenseGlass, and fully replacing the roof. Two skylights were added for natural light, and the soffits and fascia were rebuilt to prevent recurring issues. The interior was transformed with new cedar flooring, built-in cedar shelving and desk, and full window/door trim upgrade.

Do:

  • ✔️ Inspect roof and skylight seals annually to prevent moisture intrusion
  • ✔️ Keep the area beneath the structure clear of leaves, debris, or burrowing pests
  • ✔️ Reapply protective stain or sealer to cedar trim as needed to preserve its finish

Don’t:

  • ❌ Don’t ignore signs of drafts — even small gaps can invite pests and cold air
  • ❌ Don’t obstruct interior airflow — good ventilation helps maintain longevity and comfort

🤕 Symptoms: -Rotted structural footings and compromised framing -Roof collapse due to years of moisture exposure and neglect -Drafty, poorly installed windows and wide entry gaps from prior work -Animal intrusion from underneath, making the space unsanitary and unsafe -Interior unsuited for storage, work, or retreat — cold, dark, and exposed 🩺 Diagnosis & Evaluation: This coop wasn’t just old — it was forgotten. Animals had made their home beneath it, the roof had failed, and the structure was hanging on by soft studs and wishful thinking. But beneath the decay was potential. The bones were still whispering, “fix me right.” Full demo wasn’t needed. Revival was. 🛠️ Treatment Plan: -Lifted the structure and replaced all pressure-treated footings -Added a central beam + footing to support flooring long-term -Reframed damaged walls and sealed all animal entry points -Installed 3" rigid foam board insulation + spray foam sealant in all wall cavities -Sheathed the walls with DenseGlass, then taped, painted, and finished for moisture resistance -Fully rebuilt roof system and added two skylights to invite natural light -Reconstructed soffits and fascia to prevent water intrusion and future rot Interior Work Included: -Laid new cedar plank flooring over original subfloor -Fabricated custom cedar desk and built-in shelving -Wrapped all window/door trim in cedar for character and protection -Light touch-up paint on exterior — enough to refresh, not erase its history 💡 Prognosis: Now this coop is more than functional — it’s poetic. What was once an afterthought is now a fully restored, insulated, light-filled retreat. Warm in winter, dry in spring, sealed year-round. Whether it’s storing tools, housing projects, or just offering peace — this space is now alive again.
