📸 These photos show:
A complete copper flashing replacement and roof system upgrade in Pleasant Valley, NY, including a full-depth reconstruction of the chimney detail and a modernized skylight installation.
We began by removing all old shingles and flashing around the chimney. The existing copper was covered in layers of hardened caulk, offering no mechanical hold and trapping condensation underneath. Once exposed, we cut and fabricated new copper step and counter flashing, each panel custom-bent to seat perfectly into mortar joints and layered in proper shingle sequence. Every transition was folded, not caulked — ensuring expansion and contraction could occur naturally without breaking the seal.
Beneath the visible copper, we applied a full ice-and-water shield underlayment, protecting the roof deck from future infiltration. Fresh shingles were installed around the detail, overlapped in the correct pattern for continuous drainage. On the rear slope, the team replaced the aged skylight unit, added a new roof vent and boot, and integrated all penetrations under the underlayment system rather than surface-sealing — a key difference between temporary repair and permanent restoration.
The finished copper work gleams now but will slowly patina, forming its natural self-protecting finish over time — a hallmark of longevity and craftsmanship.
✅ Maintenance Tips:
Schedule annual roof inspections focusing on chimney and skylight areas.
Avoid smearing new caulk over copper or shingles; always address leaks by checking flashing layers.
Clean skylight channels yearly to prevent debris buildup and water pooling.
Watch for early oxidation streaks — they’re normal and mark healthy copper aging.
Result:
A structurally balanced, watertight, and architecturally clean roof system — rebuilt to specification, not assumption. The copper flashing now functions as both protection and design, and the new skylight and vent upgrades give this roof a fresh, breathable rhythm built for the long haul.
